Taxes?
22.10.2009 William O´Gorman

Just another point of view from this Irish man in this small town. I must say that at the moment things in Europe are getting better and life seems to have survived this near fatal attempt by economics to destroy us all. What I mean is that the worst of the recession seems to be over. However from the small rock I come from this is not the case.

In Ireland all hell is starting to break loose and the tides are still turning on this little island. The economy in Ireland has been hit hard…very hard and much of the blame can be laid at the door of the Irish government. Thank god we said yes to the Lisbon treaty the second time around for I fear we could have been cut off from the ever precious flow of EU money that has kept us afloat. Anyway my point is not to discuss or go over the merits of the Lisbon treaty or Irelands sick economy (although that would be an interesting blog also) it is to compliment Finland and Kalajoki for they way you have spent your hard earned tax money in the recent months and even during this economic dark time.

My examples of this relate to the new road works that have taken place in Hiekkasärkät and in the town itself. I know that these roads are state controlled roads but our taxes still paid for them. What I would like to comment about is the speed and quality of the work.

The new roundabout outside Hallpa Halli took only a few days and the major road work out by Hiekkasärkät took only as long as the summer sun was shining. These works in Ireland would take much longer to complete and not be as good. Now the entrance to Hiekkasärkät looks fantastic and will only add to the atmosphere and renewal of the tourism area. Also the new roundabout in the town is welcomed and I hope is the first step in making the centre of the town look better (next step is making that monstrosity of a bus station magically disappear!).

There have also been other minor works that have taken place in the town but unfortunately I am not sure of the names of the places but I hope that people in Kalajoki can appreciate what has been done. So well done to those who made the decisions, even if it took a few years, and to those who have paid their taxes! I must admit it is nice to live in a country where one can see where their tax money goes as opposed to paying for government ministers trips to America and new suits!
